I first encountered the Winged Victory of Samothrace 33 years ago, while studying history at university. During a course in world art and culture, we were exploring Ancient Greece when I saw this sculpture for the first time.
Even in its surviving, fragmented form, I felt something extraordinary in it. It wasn’t simply a statue standing still. I could almost feel its movement — the body leaning into the wind, the fabric swept around it, the vastness of the sea and open sky.
That feeling stayed with me for more than three decades.
In this artwork, I allowed myself to imagine the figure differently: restored, alive, surrounded by turquoise sea and sky, with sunlight breaking through the clouds and wind moving around her.
This is not an attempt to reconstruct the ancient sculpture as it originally looked. It is my personal interpretation of the feeling I had when I first saw her — movement, freedom, wind, sea, and the courage to step forward into open space.
